After meeting your guide in Chengdu, you'll begin your journey toward the mountains of Western Sichuan.

Your first stop is Dujiangyan, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and the world's oldest irrigation system still in operation. Built over 2,200 years ago during the Qin Dynasty, it continues to regulate the Min River without the use of a dam. Beyond its remarkable engineering, the area is surrounded by lush forests, ancient temples, and traditional Chinese architecture — one of the country's most significant cultural landmarks.

Next, continue to the Wolong Shenshuping Panda Base, the largest giant panda conservation and breeding center in China. Rebuilt after the 2008 Wenchuan Earthquake, the base provides a spacious natural habitat where visitors can observe giant pandas of different ages, from playful cubs to fully grown adults, and learn about China's ongoing conservation efforts.

In the afternoon, drive through the mountain landscapes of Western Sichuan to Siguniang Mountain Town (Rilong Town). Located at the foot of the famous Four Sisters Mountains, this peaceful Tibetan-style town serves as the gateway to the national park — surrounded by snow-capped peaks and alpine valleys.

Good to know: This is your first significant altitude gain. Keep the evening relaxed, drink plenty of water, and avoid strenuous activity. Giant panda activity varies with weather, season, and feeding schedule.
Day 2
Shuangqiao Valley → Lixiao Road → Gulgou Hot Springs
China's Oriental Alps in the morning, a legendary scenic drive in the afternoon, natural hot springs at night.
📍 Gulgou ~1,800m 🚗 ~150 km ⛰ Shuangqiao Valley up to ~3,840m

This morning, explore Shuangqiao Valley, the largest and most accessible of the three valleys within Siguniang Mountain National Park. Stretching over 30 kilometers, the valley is famous for its dramatic alpine scenery — glacier-capped mountains, crystal-clear streams, vast meadows, dense forests, and unique rock formations. Thanks to the park's eco-friendly shuttle buses, visitors can comfortably explore multiple scenic viewpoints while enjoying short walks. Throughout the valley you'll be rewarded with spectacular views of the surrounding snow peaks, often referred to as the "Oriental Alps."

After lunch, continue along the legendary Lixiao Road (Lixian–Xiaojin Highway), one of the most scenic mountain roads in Sichuan. Winding through untouched forests, alpine meadows, deep valleys, and high mountain passes, this route offers incredible panoramic views at almost every turn. Compared with the busier highways in the region, Lixiao Road remains relatively quiet and is especially popular among photographers and self-drive enthusiasts who appreciate its pristine natural scenery.

By late afternoon, arrive in Gulgou, a charming mountain town best known for its natural hot springs. Nestled in a beautiful valley, Gulgou has long been a popular wellness destination — soak in mineral-rich spring water surrounded by forests and mountains. The perfect place to unwind and recharge after a day of exploring the highlands.

Good to know: The upper valley at Shuangqiao reaches above 3,800m and is much colder than the town — carry a warm, windproof layer even on a clear morning. Lixiao Road is scenic but winding; motion sickness tablets recommended for sensitive travelers.
Day 3
Gulgou → Bipenggou Scenic Area → Chengdu
Western Sichuan's hidden alpine gem, then a scenic drive back to the city.
📍 Return to Chengdu 🚗 ~230 km ⛰ Bipenggou up to ~3,670m

After breakfast, head to Bipenggou Scenic Area, one of Western Sichuan's finest alpine landscapes. Located on the eastern edge of the Tibetan Plateau, Bipenggou is renowned for its stunning combination of snow-capped mountains, emerald lakes, waterfalls, glaciers, colorful forests, and wide alpine meadows. The scenery changes dramatically with the seasons — from lush green in summer to brilliant gold and crimson in autumn, then snow-covered in winter.

Visitors travel through the valley by eco-shuttle before enjoying leisurely walks to several scenic viewpoints, where magnificent mountain vistas and crystal-clear lakes create unforgettable photography opportunities. In autumn, the mountainsides transform into layers of gold, crimson, orange, and deep red — walking through Bipenggou feels like stepping into a painting.

After exploring Bipenggou, begin the scenic drive back to Chengdu, bringing your journey through the highlands of Western Sichuan to a close.

Good to know: Allow enough time in Bipenggou before starting the return drive to Chengdu. If you'd like to extend the day further, let your guide know — there is flexibility in the return schedule.
Meal notes: Daily breakfast is included at all hotels. Lunch and dinner are arranged flexibly — your guide can recommend Sichuan cuisine, Tibetan-region specialties, noodles, and lighter alternatives along the route. Please tell us in advance of any dietary restrictions, allergies, vegetarian or halal requirements.
Why Join This Tour in Autumn?

Autumn is widely considered the most beautiful season to visit Western Sichuan. From late September through early November, the mountains are transformed into a spectacular display of golden forests, crystal-clear skies, and snow-capped peaks. Unlike the rainy summer months, autumn usually brings stable weather, excellent visibility, and comfortable temperatures — making it the ideal season for photography and road trips.

This itinerary has been carefully designed to showcase three of Western Sichuan's most breathtaking autumn destinations.

🏔 Stop 1

Siguniang Mountain — The "Oriental Alps" in Golden Colors

In autumn, Siguniang Mountain becomes one of the most picturesque alpine landscapes in China. Vast birch and maple forests turn brilliant shades of gold and orange, creating a stunning contrast against the snow-covered peaks of the Four Sisters Mountains. Crystal-clear rivers reflect the colorful forests, while the crisp mountain air and blue skies make every viewpoint feel like a postcard.

Shuangqiao Valley is especially beautiful during this season, with its golden meadows, glaciers, and mirror-like lakes offering endless opportunities for photography.

🛣 Stop 2

Lixiao Road — One of Western Sichuan's Most Scenic Autumn Drives

Unlike many famous highways that attract large crowds, Lixiao Road remains relatively quiet and feels wonderfully untouched. During autumn, the surrounding mountains are blanketed in vibrant forests of yellow, orange, and red. Every bend reveals a different panorama — towering peaks, alpine valleys, rushing rivers, and endless stretches of colorful woodland.

For many photographers and road-trip enthusiasts, this is one of the most underrated scenic drives in Western Sichuan.

🏞 Stop 3

Bipenggou — Western Sichuan's Most Spectacular Autumn Forest

If there's one place that perfectly captures the beauty of autumn in Western Sichuan, it's Bipenggou. The valley is famous for its extraordinary mix of turquoise lakes, waterfalls, glaciers, alpine meadows, and one of the largest expanses of autumn forest in the region. As temperatures cool, the mountainsides gradually transform into layers of gold, crimson, orange, and deep red.

Walking through Bipenggou during autumn feels like stepping into a painting. Combined with snow-covered peaks in the distance and exceptionally clear mountain air, it's considered by many locals to be one of the finest places in Sichuan to experience the fall season.

Why This Route?
🗺️

Three very different experiences in three days

Wildlife conservation, high alpine valley exploration, and a pristine lakeside wilderness — each day is distinct, and together they deliver a complete and satisfying picture of western Sichuan.

🍂

Optimized for autumn

Both Siguniang Mountain and Bipenggou are at their most spectacular in autumn. This route puts you in both locations at the ideal time of day, giving you the best possible chance of peak foliage and clear skies.

♨️

Gulgou hot springs as a natural midpoint

Rather than an unnecessary hotel in a transit town, Day 2 ends in a genuine wellness destination. A long soak in natural mineral springs after a day in the mountains makes a real difference to how you feel on Day 3.

🛣️

Lixiao Road — a hidden highlight

Most visitors to the region travel the same busy highways. The Lixiao Road is quieter, more scenic, and rarely visited by independent tourists — a genuine back-road discovery built into the itinerary.
