This is the route that even experienced Western Sichuan travelers haven't done. The Genyen Grand Loop takes you deep into the plateau — past Litang, beyond the G318, into a remote world of sacred peaks, high-altitude lakes, and endless grasslands where very few foreign travelers ever venture.
The centerpiece is the Eye of Genyen (格聂之眼) — a turquoise lake cradled beneath the flanks of Mount Genyen (6,204m), one of the most sacred mountains in Tibetan Buddhism. The reflections, the silence, and the scale of the landscape are unlike anything on the more-traveled routes.
This is a journey for those who want to go further, stay longer, and see the side of Western Sichuan that barely exists on the map.

Day-by-Day Itinerary
Depart Chengdu and enter the Tibetan Plateau via the iconic G318 Highway. Cross Erlang Mountain and descend into the Dadu River valley, where the landscape transforms dramatically. Arrive in the Kangding area and continue to Xinduqiao — known as the "Photography Valley of China" — where golden evening light falls across a patchwork of Tibetan farmhouses, willow trees, and snow peaks. First night at altitude, light acclimatisation.
Cross the sweeping Tagong Grassland — a vast highland plain dotted with yaks, nomadic tents, and the gold-roofed Tagong Monastery. Continue toward Litang, the world's highest county town at 4,014m elevation, set on a wide plateau basin surrounded by snow peaks. Explore the old Tibetan quarter, visit the ancient Litang Monastery (one of the largest in the region), and settle in for a second night of acclimatisation at high altitude.
Leave the main highway behind and venture into the remote pastoral valleys south of Litang. The Cuopu Valley is a hidden gem — wild horses roam the meadows, fluttering prayer flags span rushing streams, and Tibetan nomadic communities live much as they have for centuries. Almost no tourists come here. Walk the valley floor, photograph the horses at golden hour, and spend the night in a small local guesthouse — a completely different pace from the road.
Begin the approach to the Genyen Sacred Mountain area. The drive takes you through increasingly dramatic plateau landscapes — empty grasslands, winding river valleys, remote Tibetan villages where the hospitality is genuine and unhurried. As you ascend, the 6,204m summit of Mount Genyen begins to emerge in the distance, its glacial flanks catching the afternoon light. Arrive at the Genyen South entrance and prepare for the highlight days ahead.
The highlight of the entire loop. Trek or drive to the shores of the Eye of Genyen (格聂之眼) — a perfectly still turquoise lake cradled in a high-altitude basin, with the full face of Mount Genyen (6,204m) reflected in the water on clear mornings. The view is one of the most powerful in all of Western Sichuan. Then cross the Zhawala Pass at 5,022m — a high plateau saddle surrounded by prayer flags, with panoramic views across the sacred mountain range. This day should not be rushed.
Begin the return arc. The afternoon route brings you back toward the Gongga Mountain corridor — at 7,556m, Gongga is the highest peak in Sichuan and one of the most dramatic in Asia. Position yourself at a viewpoint for sunset or golden-hour light on the glacier face — one of Western Sichuan's most iconic photographs. Overnight near Xinduqiao, with time to reflect on the journey.
Final morning in the plateau air — optional sunrise walk or last photography before beginning the descent back through Erlang Mountain and into Chengdu. Return to the city in the late afternoon or evening, carrying an experience that most travelers never get close to. We drop you at your hotel or the airport.
A note on this route: The Genyen area is genuinely remote. Roads can be rough, guesthouses are simple, and the experience is raw and real — that's exactly why it's special. We carry portable oxygen, maintain daily safety checks, and have on-the-ground contacts throughout the loop. We do not take this route lightly, and we make sure you're well-prepared before you go.
