Erhai Lake with Cangshan Mountain backdrop in Dali, Yunnan
7 Days · 6 Nights · Departing Kunming

The Yunnan Dream

Stone Forest · Jiuxiang Karst Cave · Dali · Erhai Lake · Tiger Leaping Gorge · Jade Dragon Snow Mountain

This is a private journey through Northwest Yunnan, designed for travelers visiting for the first time but wanting more than a standard sightseeing route. Classic Kunming, Dali, and Lijiang — explored in a slower, more private, and more culturally grounded way.

The journey begins around Kunming, where limestone has shaped a forest of stone pillars above ground and a hidden maze of rivers, caves, and waterfalls underground. From there, the route travels west to Dali, where Cangshan Mountain, Erhai Lake, Bai old towns, and traditional tie-dye reveal a slower side of Yunnan. Further north, the journey enters Lijiang and the old Tea Horse Road — connecting Naxi villages, Dongba traditions, Tiger Leaping Gorge, and Jade Dragon Snow Mountain.

Day-by-Day Itinerary
Day 1
Kunming → Stone Forest → Jiuxiang Karst Cave
From limestone pillars above ground to an underground world of rivers, caves, and waterfalls.
📍 Kunming 🚗 Scenic transfers ~2 hrs ⛰ ~1,890m

The journey begins from Kunming with two very different karst landscapes. In the morning, enter Stone Forest Scenic Area, where limestone pillars rise from the ground like a natural maze carved by water and time. You walk between stone columns, narrow paths, and rock walls — it feels more like exploration than sightseeing.

Later, continue to Jiuxiang Karst Cave. Unlike the open-air landscape of Stone Forest, Jiuxiang feels like stepping into an underground world. Rivers move through the caves, waterfalls drop between rock walls, and huge chambers open up inside the mountains. This first day shows that Yunnan is not only about old towns and snow mountains — it is also a land shaped by limestone, underground water, and deep geological time.

Good to know: This day assumes you arrived in Kunming the night before. Both Stone Forest and Jiuxiang involve walking and stairs. A light jacket is useful inside Jiuxiang Cave, which can be damp.
Day 2
Kunming → Dali | Three Pagodas & Dali Old Town
Leaving Kunming's karst landscapes for Dali's lakeside culture and Bai architecture.
📍 Dali 🚄 High-speed train or private vehicle, ~2–3 hrs ⛰ ~2,000m

Today, travel from Kunming to Dali by high-speed train or private vehicle. After arriving, visit Chongsheng Temple Three Pagodas. Standing quietly with Cangshan Mountain behind them, the pagodas feel like an entrance into Dali's history — connecting this relaxed lakeside town to the ancient Nanzhao and Dali Kingdoms.

In the afternoon, explore Dali Old Town. Stone-paved streets, Bai-style architecture, hidden lanes, and distant mountain views create your first impression of Dali. The rhythm here feels slower than Kunming, closer to lake air, mountain shadows, and Bai daily life.

Good to know: Kunming to Dali can be arranged by high-speed train or private vehicle depending on your preference and logistics. If the travel time is later in the day, the pace in Dali Old Town can be adjusted.
Day 3
Dali → Xizhou Old Town → Bai Tie-Dye → Erhai Lake Cycling
The most complete Dali experience — Bai villages, traditional craft, and cycling between the lake and the mountain.
📍 Dali 🚲 Erhai cycling ~10 km (adjustable) ⛰ ~2,000m

In the morning, visit Xizhou Old Town. Compared with Dali Old Town, Xizhou reveals more of Bai culture and local daily life. Traditional courtyards, old streets, and village rhythms give you a closer look at a more grounded side of Dali.

Then take part in a Bai tie-dye experience — cloth, patterns, dyeing, and handwork, with English explanation connecting the craft to Bai culture. This is a living tradition of local aesthetics, not a staged performance.

In the afternoon, cycle along Erhai Lake. Cangshan Mountain rises in the distance, while villages, farmland, and open lakeside views pass beside you. The shoreline here is connected with Bai villages, fields, and everyday life.

Good to know: The Erhai Lake cycling section is around 10 km and can be adjusted based on your comfort level. If there is rain or strong wind, cycling can be changed to a lakeside walk or scenic drive.
Day 4
Dali → Shuanglang → Lijiang Old Town → Dongba Paper Making
The cultural transition from Bai lakeside life into the world of the Tea Horse Road.
📍 Lijiang 🚗 Scenic drive ~3 hrs ⛰ ~2,400m

In the morning, travel north along Erhai Lake and stop at Shuanglang, one of Dali's most scenic lakeside villages — one last view of open water before heading toward Lijiang.

After arriving in Lijiang, walk through Lijiang Old Town (Dayan). Canals, stone bridges, wooden houses, and winding lanes shape the atmosphere of this old Tea Horse Road town. The Tea Horse Road was a mountain trading network connecting southwest China, Tibetan regions, and wider routes beyond — Lijiang became a meeting place for traders, horse caravans, and mountain cultures.

Later, experience Dongba paper making. Dongba culture is closely connected with Naxi tradition and an ancient pictographic writing system. This experience helps you see Lijiang as more than a beautiful old town — a place with deep cultural roots that still continue today.

Good to know: The altitude rises from ~2,000m in Dali to ~2,400m in Lijiang — the day should not be overly rushed. The Dongba paper making experience includes English explanation.
Day 5
Lijiang → Tiger Leaping Gorge → Baisha / Shuhe Old Town
One of the natural highlights — a river carved between two snow mountains.
📍 Lijiang 🚗 Drive to gorge ~1.5 hrs ⛰ Lijiang ~2,400m; gorge altitude varies

Travel from Lijiang to Tiger Leaping Gorge, where the Jinsha River rushes between Jade Dragon Snow Mountain and Haba Snow Mountain, with steep walls rising on both sides. It is not a vast desert canyon — it is a river passage carved between two snow mountains. Standing above the gorge, you can hear the water below and feel the tension between river and rock.

The activity level can be adjusted based on your fitness, weather, and road conditions — from a boardwalk-style walk or scenic viewpoint to a longer hiking section for stronger travelers.

After the gorge, visit Baisha or Shuhe Old Town. Compared with the busier Dayan Old Town, these villages reveal a quieter and more lived-in side of Naxi culture — stone lanes, traditional houses, and snow mountain views.

Good to know: Activity level at Tiger Leaping Gorge is flexible. Comfortable non-slip walking shoes or light hiking shoes are recommended. Rainy season or road conditions may affect the arrangement.
Day 6
Lijiang → Jade Dragon Snow Mountain → Yuhu Village
The mountain finale — highland snow peaks and Naxi village life at the foot of the mountain.
📍 Lijiang 🚗 Local transfers ~1.5 hrs ⛰ Up to ~4,500m

Today is the mountain finale of the journey. Jade Dragon Snow Mountain is Lijiang's most iconic natural landmark — snow peaks, glacier views, highland scenery, and wide mountain landscapes. As the altitude rises, the air, temperature, and scenery all begin to change. The day is designed to move at a comfortable, slower pace.

Afterward, visit Yuhu Village, a Naxi village at the foot of the snow mountain. Traditional stone houses, village lanes, and the distant mountain backdrop create a quiet but powerful scene. Here, traditional life is not displayed inside a museum — it continues beneath the snow peaks.

Good to know: Jade Dragon Snow Mountain reaches up to ~4,500m. The exact plan will depend on weather, tickets, and your condition. Mountain weather can change quickly, and full snow mountain views cannot be guaranteed.
Day 7
Lijiang → Departure
A relaxed morning in old town, then onward to your next destination.
📍 Lijiang → Airport / Railway Station 🚗 Transfer ~1 hr ⛰ ~2,400m

Today is departure day. If your departure time is later in the day, enjoy a relaxed morning in Lijiang — a final walk through the old town, a quiet coffee, or one last view of the surrounding mountains. Then transfer to the airport or railway station according to your schedule.

Good to know: Free time depends on your departure time. If connecting to an international flight, we recommend allowing generous transfer time. This route can also be extended toward Shangri-La or Meili Snow Mountain.
Meal notes: Daily breakfast is usually arranged through the hotels. Lunch and dinner are arranged flexibly based on the day's route and your preferences — this allows more freedom and makes it easier to recommend local food that suits your taste. Along the route, we can recommend Yunnan rice noodles, Bai-style dishes in Dali, Naxi flavors in Lijiang, seasonal mushroom dishes, and local home-style meals.
